Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid found in the body and 2/3 is present in muscle tissue. It is a non – essential amino acid which becomes conditionally essential under high stress conditions. Such conditions include muscle exertion, recovering immune system and gastrointestinal health issues.
The synthesis rate of glutamine in muscle is higher than that of any other amino acid. Studies have proved glutamine to be an important fuel for cells of immune system and mucosal cells of the intestine. As per research, endurance exercises lead to a low plasma glutamine concentration and depleted glycogen stores. This is observed post 2 hours of exercise. It takes more than 7 hours for glutamine concentrations to come to normal range.
In athletes, glutamine acts as a marker to indicate over training. It is also found that L-glutamine re synthesize carbohydrates post workout, thus emphasizing on taking a post workout meal as soon as possible.
